Magic Bars

We were recently invited to a housewarming/birthday open house thrown by our new neighbors.  I don’t really know them yet but they’ve been super nice every time I’ve interacted with them.

I figured, I can’t go empty-handed, right?  But I also was kind of busy and didn’t have a lot of time.  Fortunately, Magic Bars really are magic.  They’re delicious, easy and quick to make and I already had all the ingredients in my kitchen!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 t vanilla
  • 1 cup graham cracker or vanilla wafer crumbs (or some combination of the two)
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (or walnuts, or mix the two – your call)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

Directions

Line an 8 or 9” baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.

In a small/medium bowl, melt your butter.  Add in the vanilla and stir until it’s well distributed.  Add in your graham cracker/vanilla wafer crumbs and mix with a fork.

Get your prepared pan and line the bottom with the graham cracker mix.  Don’t press too hard, just gently line the bottom as evenly as you can.IMG_9668

Get your coconut and spread that evenly over the crust.  Next do the same with the chips – spread them evenly over the coconut.  And yes, you guessed it, get the chopped nuts (whatever ones you chose to use) and spread them evenly over the chips.

Finally, get your sweetened condensed milk and pour it evenly over everything.  Don’t mix – just leave as is.

Bake at 350 for about a half hour or until the whole thing is a nice golden brown.IMG_9673

Move the entire pan to a wire rack to cool completely.  After it’s cool, remove the whole dessert from the pan by the parchment paper, cut into squares and serve.  You also might want to throw it in the fridge for an hour or so to firm them up a bit so they’re not quite so gooey and messy (don’t worry – even in the fridge they’ll still be plenty gooey!)

See…magic!IMG_9679
