I actually posted something similar a couple months ago…and then I didn’t follow my own damn advice. Seriously, sometimes I’m not bright.
So, I’m posting again – as much as a kick in the head for me as for everyone else. Plus, I’ve got a much larger Instagram and Twitter following than I had before (Thanks all!!!! But I have a loooong way to go.) So, here goes:
Read the whole recipe first before you start. Take a couple minutes and just do it.
This may sound exceedingly obvious but I’ve been guilty of it many, many times and I bet you have too. You start a recipe and get to, say, ingredient 6 and think “I’m sure I had more chocolate chips” or “no one could have eaten those last three eggs for breakfast” or whatever. And you find out…oops. Sometimes it’s not practical to put a recipe to the side as you leave to go buy chips or eggs or baking soda.
So before you start, just do a super quick once-over to make sure you have all the ingredients you need. And enough of them. Are you sure there are two cups of flour left in that bag? Believe me – I’ve skipped this step before and it’s an enormous pain in the ass. Its even resulted in me having to throw out half-made batter because I didn’t have a key ingredient or a reasonable substitute.
So, just read through the recipe before you start, and make sure you have everything. I promise you’ll be glad you did.
