Maple Sugar Chocolate Chip Cookies

I just discovered maple sugar, and it may just be my new favorite thing.  It’s Canadian (though it’s made everywhere at this point, I guess), and is made from maple syrup.

The maple flavor is strong though not overwhelming, makes a great substitute for regular sugar and is a fantastic complement to these cookies!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened to room temperature
  • ½ cup maple sugar
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • ½ t nutmeg
  • ½ t salt
  • 1 T maple syrup
  • 4 t vanilla
  • 2 eggs, brought to room temperature
  • ½ t baking soda
  • 2 ¼ cups flour
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • Additional sea salt or flaked salt for sprinkling

Directions

These are really easy, like most chocolate chip cookies are.

Put your butter, maple sugar and brown sugar in a large bowl and mix until nice and creamy.  Then add the nutmeg, salt, maple syrup, vanilla and eggs and mix until everything is well combined.

Next, add the baking soda and mix for a minute, then slowly add the flour, mixing continually until everything is well combined.IMG_6640

Pour in your chocolate chips and stir in until they are evenly distributed through the dough.IMG_6641

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and roll out ping pong ball-sized balls of dough, placing 6 to a sheet.

Sprinkle a little salt on top of each ball of dough and bake the sheets at 350 for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges and bottoms are a nice golden brown.

Move the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely, then enjoy the maple goodness!  Makes about 3 ½ dozen cookies.IMG_6653
